Most of us do not think of ourselves as caregivers until circumstances force us into the role. A parent falls ill, hospital visits become more frequent, or a once-independent loved one suddenly needs help with daily life. By then, many families find themselves making difficult decisions with little preparation.

In this Power Break webinar, Grace Cheng, founder and CEO of Agewhale, reflected on her own caregiving journey and the lessons she learned while supporting ageing family members. Her message was simple: caregiving rarely begins overnight. The earlier families understand the realities of ageing, start important conversations, and explore available support, the better prepared they will be when the need arises.


Ageing Is About More Than Physical Health 

When people think about ageing, they often focus on physical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or mobility issues. Yet emotional wellbeing, loneliness, and cognitive decline can be just as significant.

"Some people have cared for others, some are caring for family members now, and some will become caregivers in the future," she said.

Retirement, social isolation, and the loss of friends can take a toll on emotional health, while cognitive impairment may emerge gradually and be mistaken for a normal part of ageing. Recognising these changes early can help families seek support sooner and better understand evolving care needs.

The reality is that living longer does not always mean living healthier. For many families, caregiving becomes part of the ageing journey rather than the result of a single crisis.


The Hard Conversations That Matter Most

One of Grace's biggest regrets was not having earlier conversations about end-of-life wishes and care preferences.

Following a medical emergency involving her mother-in-law, she was asked whether doctors should attempt resuscitation. "I didn't even know what she really wanted," Grace recalled.

Many families avoid discussing future care, medical decisions, or living arrangements because the conversations feel uncomfortable. Yet delaying them can leave loved ones making deeply personal decisions without knowing what the person would have wanted.

What matters is creating opportunities to listen, understand one another's wishes, and build clarity before important decisions become urgent.


Caregiving Is a Journey, Not a Role You Carry Alone

Caregiving involves far more than helping with daily tasks. It can include managing appointments, coordinating services, handling finances, navigating care options, and providing emotional support.

"It is really important to take care of yourself," Grace emphasised.

The role can place significant demands on a caregiver's time, energy, and wellbeing, which is why support matters. Community services, respite care, support groups, and professional guidance can help families share the load. Grace also noted that many subsidised services require assessments and can involve lengthy waiting times, making early planning particularly valuable.

Just as importantly, caregivers should not lose sight of the relationship behind the role. Reflecting on caring for her father, Grace said that caregiving can sometimes become so focused on responsibilities that it is easy to forget what matters most. "I am his daughter first," she said. Beyond appointments and care plans, meaningful moments together still matter.


The Bottom Line

Few people can predict exactly when caregiving will become part of their lives. What families can do is prepare through knowledge, open conversations, and an understanding of the support available. 

Caregiving is not only about responding when something goes wrong. It is about helping loved ones live with dignity, respecting their wishes, and making the most of the time you have together. The best time to start preparing is often earlier than you think.

Healthy skin habits matter just as much between flare-ups as they do during one. Dr. Chung noted that eczema management often extends beyond treating visible symptoms, with regular moisturising and ongoing maintenance strategies helping to support longer-term control.

Skin affected by eczema loses moisture more easily, making it more vulnerable to dryness and irritation. Regular moisturising helps support the skin barrier and can complement medical treatments.

Different products, including creams and lotions, may suit different body areas and skin types. Consistency is often just as important as the product itself when it comes to maintaining healthier skin.

Good vision is easy to take for granted, yet many beliefs about eye health are not supported by evidence. Understanding what helps, and what does not, can make a meaningful difference to long-term eye care. 

In this Power Break webinar, Dr. Michelle Wong, Specialist in Ophthalmology at Clarity Eye Care Centre, debunked common eye health myths and shared practical ways to care for vision over the long term.


Separate Eye Health Facts from Fiction

Several common beliefs about eye care deserve a closer look.

Reading in dim light can make the eyes feel tired, but it does not damage vision. Dr. Wong also noted that there is "no scientific evidence" that blue light from digital screens damages the eyes. While screen use may contribute to eye strain and sleep disruption, the amount of blue light emitted by devices is only a small fraction of natural sunlight exposure.

The session also challenged the belief that good vision means healthy eyes. Conditions such as glaucoma may have few symptoms in their early stages. Seeing clearly does not necessarily mean the eyes are free from disease.


Tackle Digital Eye Strain and Dry Eyes Early

Prolonged screen use can cause dry eyes, eye fatigue, blurred vision, headaches, redness, and difficulty focusing.

According to Dr. Wong, reduced blinking is a major contributor. "Normally we blink 15 times per minute. But when we are unaware and sometimes very focused on our computer, our blink rate will reduce to 5 to 7 times per minute."

To reduce discomfort, the session highlighted several strategies: maintain proper screen distance and posture, keep screens slightly below eye level, blink consciously, and follow the 20-20-20 rule by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. 

Dry eye syndrome is also common, affecting 59% of people in Hong Kong according to figures shared during the session. Because dry eyes can have different causes, proper diagnosis is important in determining appropriate treatment.


Understand Age-Related Vision Changes 

Presbyopia and cataracts are often confused, but they are different conditions.

Presbyopia is the age-related loss of near focusing ability and typically begins around age 40. Cataracts occur when the eye's natural lens gradually becomes cloudy over time.

Dr. Wong also addressed the misconception that people with myopia do not develop presbyopia. While myopia may offset some symptoms, it does not prevent presbyopia from occurring or progressing.

The session also reviewed vision correction options including SMILE, SILK, implantable collamer lenses (ICL), and cataract surgery with multifocal lens implantation. The most suitable option depends on factors such as prescription stability and overall eye health.


The Bottom Line

Many commonly repeated eye health claims do not stand up to evidence. Myths about blue light, eye exercises, and good eyesight can distract from habits that genuinely support eye health.

Regular eye examinations, healthy screen habits, UV protection, and prompt attention to symptoms remain important ways to protect vision. As the session highlighted, clear vision does not always mean healthy eyes.
